Alright, everybody. I might as well be talking into the void here, but I'd like to get this one out.
I've sent an E-Mail out to everyone the other day, but I'm going to assume barely anyone received/read it, so here's the message for everyone who comes across this randomly or deliberately.
CMH ceased league operations in early February this year. We know why, I won't mention it again.
In the meantime, I've had time to look at the development of the greater rFactor community, I've had the opportunity to help HSO grow back to a respectable organisation as part of the CMH Network, and the HFS Repository is doing well and I've received many well wishes and kind words and appreciation for making it available. (Thank you to everyone who wrote to me for that, it keeps me going.)
The rFactor 1 community, unfortunately, has gone absolutely to shit. There's no way of sugarcoating it. The only good thing about it is the 1951 F1 mod recently released by O.R.M. - and I'll come back to that later. Other than that, the standard has become cheering on and drooling over low-poly, low-quality F1-Challenge conversions with inaccurate physics, material reflection shaders that make you think a nuclear bomb exploded on the car because of how shiny it is, and any and all posts on any rFactor community being "where mod" and its derivatives.
It's a tragedy because I think this old sim still has a lot of potential and can be expanded and enjoyed with good content, but unfortunately the majority prefer quantity over quality.
That all being said, I've got the tiny inkling that it could be worth reviving CMH league activities, albeit with 99% less rFactor.
Obviously, still I'm the only person maintaining CMH in any way, shape and form, so I have to ask for help. Is anyone gonna help? That's not for me to decide.
What sims would be used, if not rFactor? Well, Automobilista 1. Yes, there is another organisation that does this, and I know 90% of CMH drivers have defected there, and it's fair to say I have my opinion about that place, how it's run and its core personnel. Anyway, the other sim? Richard Burns Rally, for those that are more into point-to-point racing, AKA Rallying. The RallySimFans plugin is great, the "Online Rally" feature is fairly easy to understand and to manage - and who doesn't like rallying?
What about mods/modding? I've got three projects in the works...albeit alone (as usual), so they're not really moving forward. One project I've got in the workshop has been "done" by yet another self-proclaimed "pro modding team" some time ago, but I know it can be done better, so I've still got that one in there. Anyway, there are great historic mods for AMS, and with AMS' improved technical capabilities over rFactor, it fits the landscape of modern sims better.
Lastly, I'm more than happy to hear of everyone. What should CMH run if it makes a return, what about one or two open races this year, and how's life in general?
Cheers and best regards. Maybe something will follow, maybe it won't. A league is nothing without its community.
